The Dazu Rock Carvings are located in the Dazu District of Chongqing, a municipality directly under the central government of China, 167 kilometers from the main urban area of Chongqing. There are over 50,000 religious stone carvings at 74 sites. They are religious cliff carvings from the late Tang and early Song dynasties, primarily featuring Buddhist themes, along with Confucian and Taoist figures, especially notable are the cliff carvings at Beishan and Baoding Mountain. The Beishan cliff carvings are located 1.5 kilometers north of the city of Dazu in Chongqing. The Beishan cliff carvings stretch over three hundred meters and are a key national cultural relic protection unit and a World Cultural Heritage site.

On December 1, 1999, at the 23rd session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee held in Marrakech, a historical and cultural city in Morocco, the five cliff carvings of Beishan, Baoding Mountain, Nanshan, Shizhuanshan, and Shimen Mountain from the Dazu Rock Carvings were officially listed as World Cultural Heritage.
